Maintaining Your Car, Truck or SUV Battery

Why does an auto battery lose charge?

There are two ways a battery can lose its charge. A short-term loss of power is the result of factors such as leaving your lights on overnight or driving short distances while using accessories that draw excessive amounts of power. In these cases, your battery may be recharged or jumped by another source and eventually regain power with the help of the alternator. That said, a faulty alternator may also be the cause of your vehicle's loss of power, as it is no longer charging your battery.

In the second case, your battery may not be able to hold a charge at all. Mileage and age are two key factors that will cause your battery to become unchargeable, as will a dead cell. Sitting for prolonged periods of time and extreme temperatures can also cause a permanent loss in your battery's ability to hold a charge.

Does the battery need any maintenance?

Modern car batteries do not require maintenance. After a visual inspection, your trained service technician may recommend servicing battery terminals if they become corroded. This service generally includes cleaning the posts and terminals, as well as applying a protective spray or grease.

How do I know my battery may need replacing?

Like all parts, batteries run their course. Most will last up to five years, depending on conditions and how often you drive. One sign of an aging battery may be an audible slow crank when you attempt to start your engine. You may also notice a check engine/battery light or the strange odor of rotten eggs. These are all key indicators your battery may soon need replacing.

A free computerized battery test at your Quick Lane can be used to not only test the battery, but also your starting and charging system — including the alternator. A battery test printout will then show if it needs to be recharged, replaced or if further repairs to your system are required.
